What is CBD?

What is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid molecule that is produced in the trichomes found naturally in hemp plants. In the past few years, CBD has become one of the most buzzed-about topics in the natural wellness space. And even though humans have been using hemp and CBD to help with ailments for millennia, the countless research papers has shown over the past 60 years that CBD has excellent anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and analgesic properties.

There is also countless clinical evidence documenting CBD’s use and value in treating various disorders, some of these include the obvious use for pain, insomnia, anxiety, some forms of tumorous cancers, depression, PTSD, Parkinson’s Disease, Epilepsy as well a vast selection of other ailments widely used in therapeutic relief.

This is why CBD now is being widely accepted all over the world as a therapeutic aid for many ailments.

Products containing only CBD are non-intoxicating, unlike THC-rich products which cause the high commonly associated with Cannabis. Our CBD contains 99.9% Pure CBD and 0.001% THC.

This makes our CBD a popular remedy among consumers looking for clear-headed relief of their symptoms and for your pets, with the peace of mind, knowing you’re giving them the most natural remedy possible.

Where does Hempire CBD come from?

Where does Hempire CBD come from?

CBD comes from the long lineage hemp plant which is naturally high in CBD. There’s a massive difference in the way that hemp is grown and the way traditional marijuana is grown and often people mistake the two.

Hemp is much more low-maintenance than marijuana in the growing process, and the crops yield much more. Hemp, by definition, contains less than 0.3% THC, which makes it non-psychoactive. THC is the psychoactive molecule in Cannabis that makes you “high”.

All of our products are 99% Pure CBD and 0.001% THC.

After the crops are harvested, it’s time to extract the oil. At Hempire we use the CO2 extraction process because it produces 3 important specific factors; Quality, Purity, and Potency. The CO2 process uses highly pressurized carbon dioxide to pull the needed phytochemicals from the plant.

The type of oil we produce is full-spectrum oil, full of compounds that are naturally occurring in the plant––terpenes, CBD, and cannabinoids, the trace amounts of THC (less than 0.01%). Since all of the compounds are still there, they can work in synergy and create what is called the “entourage effect”.

How does CBD work in the body?

How does CBD work in the body?

It is quite fascinating how CBD works within our bodies. CBD is one cannabinoid that has been found to interact indirectly with CB1 and CB2 receptors in your endocannabinoid system (ECS). All mammals including your pets have an ECS system. The ECS system controls some of the most significant functions. Its main role is to maintain bodily homeostasis – biological harmony in response to environmental changes such as physical and mental stress. Science has since found the ECS present in anything with a vertebra such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Initially, research showed endocannabinoid receptors were only present in the brain and nerves, but have since been found throughout the entire body including our skin. Today we know that the endocannabinoid system is involved in a number of processes including pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune system, and our reproductive function. Endocannabinoids are arguably one of the most widespread and versatile molecules.

The Endocannabinoid System is not a simple system, it is beautifully complex and when in balance, offers health and happiness.

THC VS CBD What’s the difference?

THC VS CBD What’s the difference?

Compare it to kombucha and beer.

Both kombucha and beer are fermented drinks. Lots of people drink kombucha, even individuals that might have moral issues with alcohol. Kombucha is a health beverage with lots of probiotics, but it also contains trace amounts of alcohol, but not enough to intoxicate you, by any means.

CBD is similar to Kombucha in this example, in that there are zero intoxicating effects, but there are loads of medicinal benefits.

Though they both come from the cannabis plant, there’s actually quite a bit of difference when it comes to CBD vs. THC—including what effects they offer and how they interact with your body.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is an annual herbaceous plant with two primary classifications — Indica and Sativa. Cannabis/Marijuana and Hemp are members of this plant genus; hemp belongs to the Cannabis sativa species only, whereas Cannabis can be a member of either indica or sativa species. Cannabis is normally harvested for its euphoric, relaxing and psychoactive properties. As opposed to Hemp. The seeds and stalks of Cannabis aren’t used as much as a food source yet or in the textiles industry. Instead the Cannabis plant is normally cultivated for its highly resinous flowers which contain an abundance of Cannabinoids as well as THC.

What can CBD be used for?

What can CBD be used for?

CBD has a long history of use dating as far back as 1200 A.D. where an ancient Chinese medical text refers to its benefits for inducing sleep. Many other cultures have been using hemp and cannabis products for years to treat conditions like epilepsy, pain, anxiety, constipation, and more. More recently, a purified form of plant-based CBD for the treatment of epilepsy.

    A few other common health concern that CBD can alleviate are;

  • Suffering from anxiety? CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety. It works by activating serotonin receptors in the brain, thus combating anxious feelings.
  • Falling asleep and overall Quality of sleep are rare for you? If you struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep, CBD can help. It doesn’t help in the way you might think though. It works by calming your mind so that you can shut down at the end of the day and fall asleep faster without racing thoughts. CBD may help by shifting your body from REM rest into deeper NREM sleep.

The ingredient also assists in regulating skin hydration and oil production on the sebaceous glans. By reducing inflammation, it may allow sebum produced to travel to the surface without becoming clogged and trapped below the skin's surface.

What does CBD feel like?

What does CBD feel like?

The best description is “A runners high” this is likely the best way to describe how it makes you feel initially. For those unfamiliar with the “runners high”, it is essentially a flood of endorphins that lifts the mood in a completely natural way. Users often experience a heightened sense of awareness, ability to focus better and an overall sense of well-being.

Taking CBD oil is more about what you don’t feel. “The way we describe taking CBD is that it’s not about what you feel, but it’s more about what you don’t feel,”. “If you have pain or anxiety, once the effects of CBD start setting in, it’s almost like it’s whisked away and it’s not there anymore.” But it’s not about totally changing your current state: “It’s not about getting high or really feeling any psychoactive effects; it’s more about melting away whatever’s getting in your way of living well, so that you can focus on living your life to the best of your ability.”

Can you Overdose on CBD Oil?

Can you Overdose on CBD Oil?

When it comes to anything that we put in or on our bodies, moderation is usually always used to begin with. It is important to remember that you can “overdose” on any substance, even if it is healthy for you. In fact, even drinking too much water can lead to health problems or even death. Studies have shown that as many as 1/6th of all marathon runners consume too much water and end up suffering from hyponatremia - a condition where the body holds onto too much water. This dilutes the amount of sodium in the blood and causes levels to be low. Symptoms include nausea, headache, confusion and fatigue and hospitalisation may be required.

As with any supplement, food, or medicine, taking too much CBD oil can have a negative effect for your body. However, in some ways “overdose” is not a helpful word as it immediately brings up images of drugs such as heroin or cocaine which, when taken in large amounts, are highly deadly and lead to thousands of deaths per year. CBD, definitely does not work in the same way as these drugs. Nor has anyone died ever from CBD being the cause.

Because it doesn't contain more than trace amounts of THC (Hempire containing 0.001% THC only). CBD use isn’t connected to our brain’s reward centre like other drugs that trigger your brain to release dopamine that results in addiction. CBD is not addictive, and those who use it for ailments can easily stop taking it without any adverse side effects.

With CBD use, you should take into account your age, weight, and any other factors before starting a course of treatment. Studies have generally shown that an appropriate dosage for a long-term health problem such as seizures or cancer is 300 mg per day, while a user with acute issues like anxiety and sleep disorders could take up to 1500 mg of CBD for around a month to begin with.

It is important to recognise the symptoms that would happen if a user accidentally took too many CBD oil. Too much CBD oil could cause unwanted changes in blood pressure, difficulty in getting oxygen into your bloodstream from your lungs, changes in pH and glucose levels, a rise or fall in body temperature, and nausea and vomiting. However, some people mistakenly think that taking too much CBD will result in a psychoactive response such as the “high” that you experience with marijuana. However, this is virtually impossible as CBD contains less than 0.001% of the psychoactive element THC. In fact, CBD may have a stabilising effect on the brain, balancing neurotransmitters in the brain, and could even counteract the effects of a psychoactive drug.

As an example patients with Parkinson’s disease showed an improvement in symptoms related to REM sleep behaviour disorder after being treated with CBD. Many other studies have found that CBD helps the quality of sleep by relieving stress on the body. In the study, Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series, it was found that 66.7% of patients’ sleep scores improved within just the first month.

There are also countless research papers online on CBD and its use for better sleep, Most users who choose to change from prescribed sleep aids, normally never go back, as CBD makes them feel more refreshed in the morning and doesn’t give you that foggy feeling. (knowing your dosage is always important through trial and error).

CBD For Athletes

CBD For Athletes

CBD is gaining popularity due to the numerous health benefits it can offer. It has been proven to be very helpful for issues like muscle pain, anxiety, and sleep problems, making it attractive for.

Increases Endurance And Fitness

By activating and balancing the endocannabinoid system in the human body, both the endurance and the overall condition of your body increases. As a result, CBD offers an athletic advantage in sport, which is useful as an athlete.

Stress and Sleep

Prior to competitions, the body can experience stress and anxiety through intense training and exercises. Anxiety before sports events can impact the athlete’s psychology and, ultimately, their performance, and CBD has been found to help suppress anxiety and stress. Moreover, CBD can help regulate sleep cycles by bringing on a certain calmness that does wonders for a good night’s sleep.

Pain Relief

When the body is exhausted or you’ve trained too hard, pain can occur. Muscle strain and cramps are frequent occurrences for professional athletes, and CBD is a potent analgesic. It can enhance the nervous system’s primary neurotransmitter by influencing the accordant receptors ―ultimately helping relax your muscles after a hard day of training by directly influencing a system that calms you down. CBD helps athletes to increase their pain threshold and at the same time ensures that muscle cramps and pain are reduced after using CBD in sports

Prevention of Inflammation

CBD has been found to alleviate inflammatory pain associated with tissue damage and neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage or irritation. These properties make it even more appealing to athletes, given that inflammation is a natural response to exertion during strenuous workout sessions or injuries. Use of CBD in the form of lotions, creams or ointments are useful in alleviating the pain associated with recovery. Especially since the anti-inflammatory effect of CBD helps to speed up the recovery process, especially when it is taken in oil tincture.

Immune System and Bone Health

The properties of CBD help the athlete to strengthen the immune system, so that your body is more resistant to stress, exhaustion and infections. it can also help develop a healthier bone deposition and aid in cases of fractures. That means keeping the body and all organs in top condition. This of course applies not only to the advantage for athletes, but for everyone.

Central Nervous System

Sports involving movement against resistance, like weight-lifting, are especially exerting for the central nervous system. And CBD can synchronize neural signalling and neurotransmitters and ultimately help athletes with the ‘shaky’ feeling after exhausting lifts.

Gastrointestinal Tract

Athletes who go through rigorous training are often in danger of reducing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Straining the GI tract may negatively influence exercise performance by causing nausea and even impaired nutritional intake. And research has shown that CBD can protect the GI tract by often reducing tissue damage.

Increases Muscle Gain

CBD in sports helps muscles to grow through the recovery process. In the area of muscle gain, CBD products are particularly beneficial for athletes whose primary goals are power building and muscle gain. Through an enhanced recovery process and prevention of inflammation, athletes can build and expand their muscle mass faster.

CBD & Gut health – What you need to know

CBD & Gut health – What you need to know

CBD has a very interesting connection to the gut, and should be part of a daily supplement program to supports healthy gut function. But to really appreciate why, you have to know a couple of basics—like, for example, why is gut health so important to begin with?
The gut, the whole intestinal tract contains the body’s largest interface between a person and his external environment. Think about it. The single-celled wall of cells that line the gut is the only line of defence protecting the bloodstream from assorted toxins and irritants that wind up in the digestive tract. Its healthy functioning is absolutely essential to nearly any aspect of human health, including, by the way, mental health.

The gut is like a second brain.
In fact, the gut has been called “the second brain” because of the direct line of communication that exists between the brain and gut. Most people are surprised to hear that 95% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut! Serotonin is the key hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. This hormone impacts your entire body. It enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with each other.
So, integrity of the gut wall is essential. You can think of a healthy gut lining as a layer of tightly woven mesh. It has a very important function: it keeps the riff-raff—like undigested food particles and toxins—out of the bloodstream.
But when there’s injury and/or inflammation in the gut, it’s like poking a hole in the cheesecloth. Now stuff that doesn’t belong, leaks into the bloodstream. When inferior particles get into the bloodstream where they don’t belong, the immune system immediately goes on high alert. It sees “foreigners” and mounts an attack. This is where you get all kinds of symptoms.
These symptoms can range from constipation and diarrhea to disruptions in the gut from the speed at which food moves through the digestive tract. to the activation of autoimmune symptoms. Symptoms frequently include a general feelings of un-wellness. That is why so many doctors say things like, “Treat the gut first,” or “Health begins in the gut.”

So how does CBD fit into the picture?
CBD plays an important role in both the structure and the function of the gut. Remember, there are both CB-1 and CB-2 receptors throughout the gut, further supporting the case for the involvement of the endocannabinoid (ECS) system in gut health. Here are some of the ways CBD can specifically support gut health.

  • It affects TNF-alpha production.

It’s been demonstrated that CBD helps suppress the release of TNF-alpha, one of the major inflammatory compounds released when the gut’s inflammatory response is out of kilter. By dialling down TNF-alpha production, CBD helps support a healthy inflammation response in the gut.

  • It affects gut digestion.

We also know that the endocannabinoid system affects gut digestion. When digestion is too fast, it generally results in diarrhoea. When it’s too slow, you get constipated. CBD helps support healthy gut digestion. It can help the body achieve the “Goldilocks effect” when it comes to digestion, not too fast, not too slow, but just right.

  • There’s cross-talk between the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and the gut microbiome.

There is good evidence of “cross-talk” between the trillions of good and bad microbes that live in your gut (the “microbiome”) and the endocannabinoid system. Multiple animal studies have shown that the administration of CBD produced gut-related health benefits. Finally, human studies of people sick with gut health issues have found a positive effect when CBD was added to their treatment regimen. All of which is to say that I consider CBD an important addition to a supplement regimen, the purpose of which is to support the healthy structure and function of the human gut.

The History of CBD

The History of CBD

The earliest documentation of Cannabinoid medicine is around 2737 BC in China. It was Emperor Shen Neng was prescribing marijuana tea for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, malaria and, oddly enough, poor memory. Popularity as a medicine spread throughout Asia, the Middle East and down the eastern coast of Africa, and certain Hindu sects in India used marijuana for religious purposes and stress relief. In 2000-1400 BC Indian holy book Atharvaveda mentions marijuana’s anti-anxiety effects. Cannabis during this period was used to treat a variety of ailments such as epilepsy, rabies, anxiety, and bronchitis. Ancient physicians prescribed marijuana for everything from pain relief to earache to childbirth.

In the year 1100 cannabis first treated epilepsy as recorded by an Arabic scholar Al-Mayusi. In 1563 Portuguese physician Garcia da Orta reports marijuana’s medicinal effects. While many other significant cannabis-related events happened in-between, in 1839, William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, an Irish doctor, produced a game-changing report on medical cannabis published in English medical journals.

By 1842 he had run numerous studies on patients with different conditions. O’Shaughnessy is often known as the father of modern cannabis medicine. After this, medical cannabis begins to take off at a more rapid pace. In 1890, Queen Victoria was prescribed medical marijuana to help alleviate menstrual cramps.

More recent significant milestones in medical cannabis are:

  • 1940: the first discovery of an individual cannabinoid, cannabinol (CBN)
  • 1942: isolation of the first cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD) by American chemist Roger Adams
  • 1964: first discovery, and isolation of D9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by Dr Raphael Mechoulam and his colleagues.
  • 1985: the FDA (in the USA) approves nabilone and dronabinol, synthetic cannabinoids.
  • 1988:Cannabinoid receptors in the brain discovered at St. Louis University.
  • 1996:California passed Proposition 215 – making medical cannabis legal.
  • 2016:Medical marijuana legalised in Australia.
  • More recently, scientists have discovered and recorded that certain components of marijuana, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects. The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response. The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters .
